CAMPOSOL moves ahead with the measurement and reduction of the water footprint29/05/2015
As part of its commitment to environmental care and having into consideration the growing concern of the final consumer for the origin of food and the CSR efforts of the manufacturing/exporting companies, CAMPOSOL is conducting an efficient management of water, the most important input for its activities.
Among the measures that CAMPOSOL is taking in this field, the participation, together with a group of leading companies from different sectors, in the Suizagua Andina project, which objective is measuring and reducing water footprint (total quantity of water used for producing a good or service), can be highlighted. Apart from the sustainable use of water, these companies searched for compensatory solutions for improving water availability and quality in their areas of activity.
In a first stage, the company focuses on reducing the asparagus water footprint. According to statistics published by Suizagua, an average of 2,150 liters of water is required to produce 1 kg of asparagus. It can be seen from the analysis of 2013 water footprint for CAMPOSOL’s asparagus that the water used for producing one kg of fresh asparagus is 1,187 liters. Although the accurate calculations for 2014 are still pending, we can state that in 2014 the company managed to reduce its water footprint and we expect to reduce even more water consumption during 2015 and compensate it through several projects that have been implemented.
Likewise, CAMPOSOL is carrying out three projects to reduce water consumption or reuse it in production processes. These projects cover the improvement of the wastewater treatment plant, groundwater reuse for new agricultural crops, and the reduction of cleaning water consumption in production plants.
Within the framework of its social responsibility projects, the company has also been taken several compensatory measures, such as the promotion of hygiene practices in the Nuevo Chao community, the improvement of plumbing facilities in a school with more than 2,000 students, and modernization of plumbing infrastructure at the community health center.
For the future, CAMPOSOL intends to incorporate the measurement of the water footprint as indicator in the annual sustainability report. Furthermore, the company is going to analyze the water footprint in other products or operating units of the company in the country and obtain the ISO 14046 water footprint certification.
