How to Store Your Avocados

Posted On: June 1, 2019

Unripe or ripe, whole or halved, show your avocados how much you care by storing them properly.

Whether you use them to bulk up a sandwich, cream up a smoothie or star as the main ingredient of a dish, the versatility of avocados can’t be denied. Avocado addicts however are commonly threatened by the fruit’s rapid maturation process, turning an avocado into an overly ripe mush faster than we can say guacamole.

Take a look at the following tips for storing your avocados in order to get the most out of nature’s butter:

1. Whole Avocados

Unripe avocados are generally firm with a lighter green skin and can be safely stored at room temperature on your kitchen counter. Keep them out of direct sunlight and check daily for a slight give upon your touch over the next few days. Ripe avocados can be stored on the counter as well, though they should be eaten within 2-3 days.

If you have too many ripe avocados to use at the moment, or you want to prevent an unripe avocado from maturing too soon, place the whole avocado in the fridge to potentially slow the ripening process.

2. Leftover Avocado

In that rare instance that you have the willpower to eat just half of an avocado, be thoughtful when saving the remaining half. Squeeze a bit of lemon juice over the fruit’s flesh to prevent it from browning, and place in a tupperware or wrap in plastic wrap. It’s important to keep air from reaching the flesh if you want to prevent the fruit from browning.

3. Freezing Avocado

You may not have tried it before, but freezing avocado can grant you the wish many have: to have avocado always on hand and ready to use.

Peel and dice your ripe avocados then toss with lemon juice. Place the chunks into a freezer bag, making sure to squeeze out any excess air. Similarly, you can blend or puree a batch of ripe avocados then pour the mixture into ice cube trays and top with a squeeze of lemon juice. Once the mixture has hardened remove the avocado cubes from the ice tray and place into a freezer bag.

Wondering what to do with frozen avocado? Instantly add a healthy dose of monounsaturated fats, Omega-3 and tryptophan to your smoothies or soups, no thawing necessary!
