A Flourishing Desert Land

Our story goes back all the way to 1997 when this land, located in the province of Viru, was an empty desert with a single farm. As in all other arid lands, just a few lizards took shelter in the shadows of the stones. At first there were only 200 people working on a small barren plot of asparagus acres. Harvesting supervisor Sergio Coronel has worked there for nearly twenty years: “Our work brought life to the desert,” he says, adding that during those years more people migrated from neighboring villages seeking work and a better quality of life.

 

 

The first villagers who inhabited this land talk about nearby mountain Bitin´s charming myth; explaining why some can still hear a band´s melody coming from its peak. They remember the desert´s transformation, rolling sand bags and removing hindering pebbles and rocks from the fields. How the dream of a life-giving land began to come true.

 

 

Yet they could still go further. Thanks to the execution of the Chavimochic irrigation project, a sustainable agriculture approach and the endeavor of workers and entrepreneurs, the first farmers undertook the challenge of growing new crops; grapes, avocados, mangos, tangerines and blueberries.

Shortly after, the continual expansion of fertile land brought a bigger population to the growing towns. Farmers, villagers and complete families migrated to develop larger urban communities in districts like Chao and Viru. Together with local authorities and the surrounding community, social projects developed, including training programs, educational workshops and health support. The adaptation towards urbanization began with the improvement of public transportation and the birth of markets, schools and local commerce.

 

 

While Camposol has expanded to include operations in northern and southern Peru, we have not lost touch with what’s most important: a united community. What started as a seed of hope in an arid desert land has not only grown into a successful company with exports around the world, but thrived as a means for our people to support their families and be proud of what they do. We’re certainly proud of them and all that we’ve achieved together these past 20 years.
